SAMBA JAZZ PERFORMERS AND COMPOSERS

Noted for its unique blend of Brazilian and jazz music, samba jazz has been a popular genre among musicians and fans alike. Notable performers and composers of this distinct style include such greats as Hermeto Pascoal, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Stan Getz, Elis Regina and João Gilberto. These influential artists are credited with helping shape and define the sound of samba jazz.

Hermeto Pascoal is recognized as one of the pioneers of samba jazz music. His signature combination of modern jazz fusion with traditional Brazilian rhythms created a captivating sound that continues to influence today’s musical landscape. Antonio Carlos Jobim was another key figure in the development of this genre, as he combined elements from both American bebop and Latin bossa nova to create what would become known as the “Jobim sound”. The Brazilian jazz trio formed by guitarist Luizinho Braga, bassist Paulo Moura and drummer Edson Lobo achieved success in the 1970s with their own brand of samba-jazz. The group’s biggest hit was “O Que É Isso, Companheiro?” (What’s This, Comrade?), which became the soundtrack to a famous TV commercial for a brand of toothpaste. The band’s name was a reference to the French-Arabesque of the title character in the book The Count of Monte Cristo.

INFLUENCES ON OTHER GENRES

Samba jazz is a genre of music that has been heavily influenced by the musical traditions of both Africa and South America. The distinct rhythm and tempo, along with its incorporation of traditional instruments, such as the berimbau, have made it an incredibly popular style across many genres. Samba jazz has had a tremendous influence on other musical genres like bossa nova and choro music from Brazil, as well as salsa from Cuba. It has also been embraced by many in the contemporary jazz scene who look to it for inspiration in creating their own unique sound.

The African rhythms that form the core of samba jazz are known for their emphasis on repetition and circular patterns. This type of groove has been incorporated into styles such as hip-hop, funk, soul, EDM and even reggae music. Performance Elements of Samba Jazz

In order to achieve a sound that is true to the samba jazz style, you need to incorporate certain performance elements into your bass lines. These include: • Open string plucking (avoiding the use of your fingers to hit the strings) • Bending notes and fretting them with your thumb • Plucking with a pick and then strumming with your index finger, creating a percussive sound • Playing on every beat of the measure and using syncopated rhythms Playing in minor keys and using a lot of chromaticism (playing notes that are not part of the chord) Using many whole steps and half-steps, as opposed to just whole or half-steps.

SAMBA JAZZ RECORDINGS

The album ‘A Bossa Elétrica’ by João Donato is considered one of the best examples of modern samba jazz. Donato’s unique style blends his traditional Brazilian sound with American-style funk beats, creating an energetic fusion between the two genres. His catchy melodies and sophisticated rhythms make this album a must-listen for any fan of samba or Latin music in general. Another great example of samba jazz is the album Estrada Branca by Eliana Pittman. This album blends classic Brazilian samba with the distinctive beat of U.S. jazz pop music, creating a unique sound that appeals to fans of both genres. Be sure to check out the song “Estrada Branca” and other tracks from this album on YouTube.

This is a great album for those who enjoy samba music, but also appreciate the distinct sound of American jazz.
